A Beautiful Noise

There is a battle going on outside our front door. Two male meadow larks are dueling with their voices over a female. We have not yet spotted the fair maiden in question, but she must really be something. The music is amazing, the notes warble up and down as each of them responds to the other with louder and longer calls. Just as the notes from one song end, the other begins from across the way. Once in a while they resort to darting at each other and end up trading places and then the music begins again.

As I drove into town with the car windows down today I heard the calls of red wing blackbirds and song sparrows who were about their business of mating, and everywhere where fat-breasted robins hopping around in the grass and shrubbery looking for nest building materials. Everyone is busy with plans and nest building activities. Spring is here.
