At the grocery store yesterday, Carol, the checker, warned all within earshot with an ominous prediction, “There will be snow in the mountains tonight and our gardens will freeze. Bring in all of your squash and tomatoes or you will lose them,” she said.
Her words echoed in my ears as I loaded my groceries into the car. In addition to my regular purchases I had added a case of raspberries from a waist-high display in the produce department. A late crop in California had found its way to my corner of the world. The raspberries were plump and fresh and practically free at $12.00 for sixteen brimming plastic cups. What a contradiction! I was looking at a bumper crop of summer’s bounty and thinking of snow.
This morning I stood in my cozy kitchen and stirred up a fine batch of raspberry jam while watching the sun reflect off of mountain tops powdered with snow.
