Today is the first day of autumn. Stern warnings of cold temperatures tonight from the weather man sent us to the garden to harvest as much produce as we could.
For dinner tonight it is all vegetables—again. We have been eating this way every night for the past few weeks. Once the grasshoppers stopped eating all of the blossoms from the string beans, cucumbers and summer squash plants we have been able to enjoy a variety of vegetarian meals from the garden.
While we were at it, we cut the last few rose blossoms to bring inside and enjoy a few days longer. The rose bushes were new this year. Blooming all summer they valiently withstood the grasshoppers’ assaults on them.
The mountains to the east of us have begun to turn red and gold as the deciduous trees prepare for winter in a glorious display color before the snow falls. Last week we took a ride to the mountain tops to get a closer look.

Scofield Reservoir is near the top. Along with many other migrating birds, a trio of pelicans were socializing and eating near the shore. Unfortunately, when we tried to get a closer look they swam away.

On our way back down the mountain we stopped for one last photo. If you look closely you can see the farmers’ fields on the valley floor in the distance. It was a lovely afternoon in a most beautiful season.
