A week ago the weather was beautiful here. The sun was shining. Fluffy white clouds dotted the clear blue sky. Temperatures were in the 50’s and birdsong filled the air.
Gardening enthusiasm overtook my husband and he planted a few rows of peas in the garden.
Suspicious robins and magpies eyed the newly disturbed soil. They hopped over and around the rows of peas looking for stray seeds and they searched for evidence of where to dig for the buried ones.
But, seemingly, overnight winter has returned. It snowed last night and the temperature has dipped into the teens again. The rows of peas are, for the moment, protected from the birds with an inch or two of new snow.
Once again, we are staying inside bundled in sweaters and long sleeves. Missy, my companion cat, eyes us with disdain.
