One of our granddaughters turned three-years-old last weekend and I had the sweet privilege of making birthday cake with her. Since it was her cake, she planned the flavors—rainbow cake with chocolate frosting. Nothing else would do.
Making the cake and then the frosting were major operations. She and I smelled and tasted the ingredients of the cake and the frosting at each step. We discussed and assessed each ingredient and checked the amounts as she added them to the mixing bowl. Once in the oven we carefully monitored it’s progress. While the cake was baking, she carefully chose the color of the candles—red and green—”Christmas colors” she said. For an hour and a half “the cake” occupied our every thought and action. It was a large cake and a bit lop-sided because we were too anxious and frosted it before the layers were completely cool. Nonetheless, it was perfect. She added the carefully chosen candles and then it was done!
Although that particular cake will soon fade from memory, the pure joy we felt of being in complete harmony will always be a part of us both.
