A Place of My Own

The Chair 2.jpg

I believe a form of wealth is to have a place of your own for reading, thinking, and especially to spend time as you choose. With the move to our new house I was able plan such a space for myself. Important elements in my sewing room are a bit different than many quilters because my primary techniques are hand stitching—hand applique and hand quilting. The want list for my special room included: a comfortable chair, a large worktable, excellent lighting, a design wall and fabric storage. But, by far, the most important item on my list was “the chair.”

The above photo is of my special chair in my sewing room. It is my favorite place in our house. The chair is not so large and bulky that it cannot be moved closer to the table for writing or for using the light box, or to be repositioned to make best use of natural light. The chair is also not so cozy and plush that I am at risk for falling asleep at my work, as hand stitching is very relaxing to me. The chair is a comfortable height for sitting and it supports me in just the right places. In short, it fits me. It is a vintage 1950’s chair that is upholstered in leather of my favorite color.

When I am sitting in my chair with an hour of undisturbed stitching time stretched out before me, I feel very rich indeed!
